Ultimate Chefchaouen Travel Guide

If you’re looking for a place to escape the hustle and bustle of Marrakech or Fez, Chefchaouen is the perfect spot.

If you’re looking for a place to escape the hustle and bustle of Marrakech or Fez, Chefchaouen is the perfect spot. The small city is located in the Rif Mountains of northwest Morocco, about three hours away from Marrakech. It’s known as Morocco’s “Blue City” because of the vibrantly blue-painted buildings throughout the city center. Although it is a conservative city, it is well worth a visit—the bluewashed streets and buildings are unlike anywhere else in the world. Here are some tips for your ultimate Chefchaouen travel guide!

First things first: what to pack. Because Chefchaouen is located in the mountains, the weather is cooler than Marrakech or Fez. I would recommend packing a jacket or sweater for the evenings, as well as comfortable shoes for walking around the city. The streets are narrow and often crowded, so avoid wearing anything too loose or flowy that might get caught on something.

When it comes to accommodation, there are a few options in Chefchaouen. There are several hostels located near the city center, which is where you’ll want to be spending most of your time. If you’re looking for something more upscale, there are also a few hotels located in the blue area of town. Regardless of where you stay, make sure to book in advance—Chefchaouen is a popular destination, especially in the summer months.

Now let’s talk about what to do in Chefchaouen! There are plenty of activities to keep you busy for a few days. First, wander around the city and take in all the blue sights. Make sure to visit the kasbah, which is a fortress located in the center of town. The views from the top are incredible—you can see all of Chefchaouen stretched out before you. You can also visit one of the many mosques or medersas (Islamic schools) in Chefchaouen—just remember to dress conservatively and remove your shoes before entering.

If you’re looking for some outdoor activities, there are plenty of options in Chefchaouen as well. There are several hiking trails located near the city, which offer stunning views of the Rif Mountains. You can also go swimming in one of the many waterfalls located nearby. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even go tubing down the river!
